One the coast of the Adriatic Sea lies the beautiful and tiny country of Montenegro. A half million people, a beautiful coast line, mountains and karst… and one large winery. Plantaze winery was started 50 years ago in than socialist Yugoslavia as a worker owned winery whose sole purpose was to grow as much grapes as possible to produce huge quantities and employ as many as possible. Plantaze has the largest vineyard in one piece in all of Europe with 11 million grape vines growing on 2,310 hectares of land! (Imagine about half of Manhattan planted with grape vines.) In addition native Montenegrin varietals Vranac and Krstac they also grow and bottle international varietals. Their impressive wine Cellar “Sipcanik” is a tall, long tunnel carved into a mountain. It was once built in the 1940’s and used to house military equipment and planes. Today it’s filled with lots of great wine in barrels.
